SECONDARY SCHOOLS MANAGEMENT: PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES

ABSTRACT 

This work is on the secondary school management challenges on the Esan West Local government in Edo State. The study sought the opinion of 200 stratified sampling techniques was used to select managers drawn from 10 secondary schools in Esan West Local government Area of Edo State. A questionnaire titled Questionnaire of secondary school leadership and management challenges (QSSLMC) was design to 0btain relevant information from the respondent, while simple percentage and frequency counts were employed to analyzed the data collected in answering four research questions raised.  Finding of the study shows that leadership and management challenges existed in the local government Area. These challenges were to be cost by challenges in by instability in government and its policy, educational policies frequently changing, lack of inadequate resources, mismanagement of resources, leadership style, qualification, experience, sex and age, lack of co-operations among teaching and non-teaching staff, students co-operation in the schools. It was therefore recommended, that school managers (principal) should continue to acquire relevant training in school management to keep abreast of time. Furthermore, the principal should encourage and practice democratic style of leadership in their administration.
